The Different Antique Engagement Ring Eras:

These general styles and dates give you an idea of what type of ring to expect in a certain era. Since styles do not abruptly change, there are some approximations to expect. However, if you notice a certain style of ring, it likely came from one of these eras:

Victorian Engagement Rings- 1837-1901

The Victorian era was named after Queen Victoria of England, the ruler of the British empire at the time. She is reported to having loved jewelry and had exceptional taste. Her styles were often copied by others.

During the 1800s, the gold supply increased and most of the rings from this era were made out of yellow gold. The discovery of diamonds in South Africa also made diamonds a preferred gemstone during the Victorian period, although you will see rings from this era with other stones as well. Many rings feature rows of diamonds, sometimes very small ones. The engagement rings from the Victorian era, especially the later part were often completed with ornate filigree or engraving.

Edwardian Engagement Rings- 1901-1920

This period was named for King Edward of Britain. the Edwardian antique ring style kept much of the previous era style. However, due to the development of the oxyacetylene torch, platinum became a popular metal of the time. This metal was stronger than gold and allowed ring makers to have increased open filigree work and lacy designs. You can expect to see rings that have ornate designs such as bows, flowers, and scrolls. Most of the designs were ornate but primarily used white on white. Diamonds or diamonds with pearls set in a platinum arrangement was the sophisticated look of the upper classes.

Art Deco Rings- 1920-1935

During the jazz age, the world threw off the old designs and started choosing styles that were bold and unique for the time. Art Deco was a time for women to express their personal style and individuality, especially when it comes to jewelry. The lacy scrolls and flowers of previous generations were gone. Instead, the Art Deco style is characterized by being playful and fun with geometric shapes and straight lines. Similar to the cubist style of Picasso or the geometric shapes found in the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge, the styles are bold and different. New alloys were also discovered during this time and white gold replaced many of the platinum styles.

Retro Era Rings- 1940-1960

Before the second World War, very few rings had a center diamond. However, after a new marketing campaign in the 1940s, engagement rings almost exclusively used diamonds. As a departure from previous generations, engagement rings from the retro era featured simple designs. Solitaire rings and baguette side stones were popular features. Once the Great Depression ended, the typical size of the center stone grew larger as well. Yellow and rose gold were the metals of choice and many rings are two-toned with both yellow and white gold in the design.
